US WINE EXPORTS TO CANADA COLLAPSE 78% IN A YEAR
Canada sends about 70% of its goods south, but it also supplies most US natural gas and electricity imports and about 60% of US crude oil imports. That is the leverage.

🔴 US wine exports to Canada fell 78% in a year. That is a $357m hit in export value, per government data cited by BBC Business.
The question BBC Business asks: what leverage does a country that sells about 70% of its goods to the US actually have?
Quite a lot, on the numbers.
Canada is the top customer for 26 US states, including Maine, Michigan and Wisconsin. It ranks in the top three for 45 of the 50.
The drinks damage is already done. Provincial bans on US alcohol remain in place in 11 of Canada's 13 provinces and territories. The distillers association reported American spirits exports down more than 70%. The Wine Institute called it the most significant market disruption in decades.
Then there is travel. Canadians made 800,000 fewer trips to the US in April than the same month in 2024. BBC Business reports the travel boycott cost the US about C$3.3bn ($2.35bn) in revenue last year.
The bigger card has not been played. Prime Minister Mark Carney noted Canada supplies the vast majority of US natural gas and electricity imports and about 60% of crude oil imports. Ontario Premier Doug Ford says an energy surcharge is on the table, after floating a 25% charge on electricity exports in 2025 that his government estimated would hit 1.5 million homes and businesses in Michigan, Minnesota and New York.
Canada feels it too. Analysts estimate 50% tariffs on about $20bn of Canadian imports could trim 0.3% to 0.6% off Canadian GDP short term. An Angus Reid poll put support for walking away from talks at 76%.
The Yale Budget Lab calculates Trump's global tariffs will cost American households about $1,100 annually under current law.
Which hurts more: the wine shelves or the electricity bill?
