$500K BASE SALARIES ON OPENAI'S ROBOTICS HIRING SPREE

The top-paying role isn't a roboticist. It's a machine-learning engineer moving robotics training data between computers, the bottleneck the whole field is stuck on.

🚨 $500,000 base salary. Before equity.

That's the top of OpenAI's robotics pay band, according to Business Insider, which reviewed the company's careers page and found 27 robotics jobs listed, up from 11 in May.

Advertised bases start at $177,000 and run to half a million.

The highest-paid opening isn't what you'd guess. It's a machine-learning engineer working on distributed data systems, the infrastructure for moving huge volumes of robotics training data between computers.

That's the tell. Language models were trained on text already sitting on the internet. Robots need examples of machines and people interacting with the physical world, and companies either generate that themselves or buy it. One OpenAI role oversees the company's own data collection facilities.

The rest of the list points at hardware built in-house: actuator design engineers who make the motors that move a robot's joints, firmware engineers, a lab technician to build and test systems, and a lawyer assigned to the robotics team.

Cornell professor Guy Hoffman read all 27 postings for Business Insider and said OpenAI appears to be assembling a custom robot design team. He noted mentions of laser range finders and batteries hint at an untethered mobile robot, but nothing says wheels or legs.

OpenAI shuttered its last robotics project, the hand that solved a Rubik's Cube, in 2020. Sam Altman now says the company will "definitely do a humanoid." That puts it against Tesla's Optimus and Figure AI, a company OpenAI's own startup fund has invested in.

Would you take a $500K robotics job at OpenAI, or is that number a warning sign?
