🔴 Uber is cutting more than 3,000 jobs, about 10% of its global workforce.

The BBC reports the overhaul is designed to shrink management layers and push spending back into Uber's core business.

Chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi told staff in a company email that the taxi and delivery firm had expanded quickly but accumulated too many layers and small teams that slowed decision-making. He said the cuts would put Uber in a better position for the "biggest opportunities ahead of us".

Both managers and non-managers are affected. Many of Uber's smallest teams will be folded into larger groups. The company has not confirmed which locations take the heaviest hit.

The headcount now lands at just under 30,000 people, roughly where it stood in 2021, before its most recent stretch of expansion.

Analysts said the layoffs could generate up to $2bn in annual savings. That money is being pointed at autonomous vehicle partnerships and the expansion of ride-hailing, delivery and robotaxi operations.

Uber is also tightening its office rules, asking nearly all staff to work in person at designated hubs and capping fully remote roles at about 1%.

Investors approved. Shares rose nearly 2% after the announcement.

Unlike many big tech firms that cut staff while pouring money into AI, Uber had avoided major reductions since the pandemic.

Would you take an Uber driven by nobody?
