U.S. FEDERAL DEBT HITS $40 TRILLION
The interest bill alone has passed $1 trillion a year, money that goes out the door before a single program is funded.

🔴 The U.S. federal debt just hit $40 trillion.
That is a record, and NPR reports it landed this week.
The pace is the part that stings. The debt has doubled since 2017. Not over a generation. Since 2017.
And the carrying cost has grown with it. Just paying interest on what has already been borrowed now runs the federal government more than $1 trillion a year.
That is money spent before anything else gets funded. It buys no roads, no defense hardware, no benefits. It services what is already owed.
NPR Business laid out the milestone and the two figures that define it: the doubling since 2017, and the trillion-dollar-plus annual interest line.
When a borrower that size keeps borrowing, everyone else is in the same market for money.
Does a $40 trillion number change how you think about your own money, or is it just a headline at this point?
