🔴 A $60 billion acquisition just got Cursor cut off by its earliest partner.

OpenAI said late Friday it is ending developer access to its models through Cursor, following SpaceX's takeover of the AI coding startup. The proposed shutoff date is Nov. 12, 2026. OpenAI also said it will not provide future models to Cursor as the agreement winds down.

The stated reason, per CNBC: OpenAI said it "cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service," citing its experience with Elon Musk's companies and contracts.

SpaceX completed the $60 billion Cursor deal on Aug. 14, according to financial filings. Before going public in June, SpaceX had already absorbed X and xAI in February.

Cursor CEO Michael Truell said OpenAI models serve about 5% of Cursor user traffic and that the company is talking with OpenAI to resolve it. He also noted Cursor was one of OpenAI's very first users and had trusted the platform as neutral infrastructure.

Musk's response on X: "I couldn't care less." He repeated his claim that OpenAI's leaders "stole an open source nonprofit." He sued OpenAI, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman in 2024, lost earlier this year, and has vowed to appeal.

Anthropic went the other direction. Co-founder Tom Brown said Anthropic will increase compute to support Claude inside Cursor. Anthropic also partners with SpaceX and rents compute from it. CNBC reports Anthropic has held preliminary meetings with bankers ahead of a possible IPO at a valuation as high as $2 trillion, while OpenAI is poised to go public next year.

If your tool's model supply can be switched off by a rival's owner, is it really your tool?
