CANADA PUTS TRADE TALKS ON HOLD UNTIL THE MEMES STOP

Carney says a deal is still there for the taking, but only one that respects Canadian sovereignty and Quebec's right to protect French language and culture. Those are his conditions, not a US offer.

🔴 "When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade, stop trying to be tough and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussions."

That was Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday, per CNBC, setting out what it now takes to get his government back to a trade negotiation with Washington.

The trade war between the two countries is growing. Carney was asked about Trump administration officials mocking Canada's military in social media posts, and about President Donald Trump renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America."

His answer went further than the posts. Carney said the positive opportunity for a mutually beneficial trade deal has always existed. But he attached conditions: it has to respect Canadian sovereignty, and Canada's right to protect and promote Quebec's culture and the French language.

On the posts themselves: "It's not constructive, but that's their democracy."

So the standoff between two of the largest trading relationships on earth is now, at least publicly, blocked on tone rather than tariff schedules. No number was put on the table. No new round of talks was announced.

For anyone with supply chains, freight, or cross-border revenue between the two countries, that is the whole story: nothing moves until the temperature drops.

Does calling out the memes get Canada a better deal, or a longer wait?
