🔴 A $750,000 movie grossed over $500 million worldwide.

Variety reports that "Obsession" premiered in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival, and on Sept. 7, 2025, just two days later, Focus Features offered $14-$15 million for the rights.

The film follows a friend-zoned record store employee named Bear, played by Michael Johnston, who uses a mystical toy to force Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, to fall in love with him.

It hit theatres the following May and became a phenomenon.

The money that followed went to the people who made it. Writer-director Curry Barker, 26, signed an eight-figure deal with Universal and Blumhouse for his third feature. Navarrette, 25, was cast as Rogue in Marvel's "X-Men" reboot.

According to Variety, the two returned to TIFF a year later for a talk about the film, and the line stretched around the Metro Toronto Convention Centre an hour before it started.

Navarrette told the room she sent in a self-tape and was sure she had bombed it. She also said Nikki was originally written as the girl next door, and that she pushed to make her playfully flirty so audiences would understand Bear's obsession.

Barker, on watching the film become a meme: "It's not mine anymore."

What's the best movie you've seen that cost almost nothing to make?
