Neither MARA nor Riot posted news Friday. 24/7 Wall St. reports no confirmed catalyst, pointing instead to profit taking after a run into month-end.

🔴 Bitcoin gained 26% in a month. Riot Platforms went DOWN 2%.

That gap is the whole story.

24/7 Wall St. reports MARA Holdings fell 6% to $11.12 midday Friday, with Riot Platforms also down 6% to $19.58. Bitcoin, meanwhile, sat at $79,539.32 — barely moving.

The iShares Bitcoin Trust, which holds only Bitcoin, dipped just 0.5% to $45.05. That matters. A broad crypto shock or a coordinated risk-off move would have pulled the fund down alongside the miners. It didn't. So the selling looks specific to the mining equities, not to crypto.

Neither company posted news that morning. 24/7 Wall St. says no company-specific catalyst was confirmed for either miner, and reads the move as profit taking after names that had drifted higher into month-end.

The longer window is where it stings for anyone holding miners as a Bitcoin proxy. Over the past month Bitcoin ran 26%. MARA entered Friday up just 4%. Riot was down 2%. The producers are not capturing the underlying asset's move.

Strategy sits at the other end of the same trade. The company held approximately 843,775 Bitcoin as of July, making it the most Bitcoin-sensitive equity in the group. It fell 3% to $132.80 — closer to the coin than to hashrate economics, energy costs or fleet upgrades.

The level to watch is $79,500. A clean break lower gives the miner selloff a real narrative. A hold leaves Friday looking like positioning.

Would you rather own Bitcoin directly or own the miners?
