BILL GATES WANTS A TAX ON REPLACING WORKERS WITH AI
He calls it a "token tax": make AI substitution cost money, and route that money to the people who lose the job. Caregiving he'd wall off entirely as "Human Reserved."

🔴 Bill Gates wants companies to pay a tax every time they replace a worker with AI.
CNBC reports that Gates laid out the proposal in a 6,000-word memo published Wednesday on his personal website.
He calls it a "token tax." The idea: make it more expensive for a company to swap employees for AI tools or agents, and use the money raised to support the people who lose those jobs.
He also wants certain work walled off entirely. Gates calls them "Human Reserved" jobs, and caregiving is the first one.
That one is personal. His father received 24/7 care before dying of Alzheimer's in 2020. "Something in the care they gave my dad was irreplaceably human," Gates wrote. "No robot could or should have done it."
The forecast underneath it is blunt. Gates predicts medicine, law, middle management and even manufacturing face significant disruption within the next decade. He puts the odds of a net negative outcome from the AI transition at "very high."
He does not claim to have solved the hard part. Who decides which jobs stay human? Gates admits he can't fully answer that, and argues it should be settled through a public democratic process involving elected officials, educators, health workers and community leaders, not by what the technology happens to be capable of.
"This unprecedented technology demands an unprecedented global response," he wrote.
Would you pay more for a service if you knew a human did it?
