ANTHROPIC BUILDS A USB-C FOR AI AND FACTORY MACHINES
The standard is model agnostic, so it works without Claude. That is a land grab for the plumbing layer rather than a play for subscriptions.

🚨 Anthropic just built a USB-C for machines.
The company announced the Model Hardware Standard on Thursday, an interface designed to let AI agents operate and communicate with machinery. It works with any device that has a programmable interface, including equipment used in scientific research and advanced manufacturing.
CNBC reports the pitch is simple: standardize how information moves between an AI model and a device, so companies stop burning time on bespoke integration work.
📈 The commercial detail is that MHS is model agnostic. Users are not locked into Anthropic's Claude models. That is a bid to own the plumbing rather than sell the subscription.
"We built this for science to sort of show the promise of AI, but there's also huge benefits here for enterprise and for industry," Elizabeth Kelly, head of beneficial deployments at Anthropic, told CNBC.
It lands in a market where rivals have already spent heavily. CNBC notes OpenAI and Amazon have put billions of dollars into AI-native devices and manufacturing tools. Anthropic is building out a silicon team to design custom chips for its models and recently hired hardware executive Caitlin Kalinowski, previously at OpenAI, Meta and Apple.
For now MHS is a research preview limited to a select group of organizations in science, robotics and manufacturing. Anthropic says it plans to open-source it, which would let any device maker in any industry adopt it.
There is precedent. Anthropic open-sourced the Model Context Protocol in 2024, which connects AI agents to data sources.
Would you let an AI agent run a machine in your workplace?
