ALASKA FACES A $114-PER-RESIDENT HIT AS CANADIANS SKIP THE US

The forecast loss is spending per state resident, not total dollars. Alaska shares 1,538 miles of border with Canada, more than any other state, so the pullback lands hardest per capita.

🔴 Alaska is forecast to lose $114 per resident as Canadians stop crossing the border.

That's the top line from a Tourism Economics analysis written up by Business Insider. The firm estimated the decline in Canadian visitor spending in each state in 2025 versus 2024, then divided that loss by the state's population. The national average came out to $11 per US resident. Fourteen states plus Washington, DC landed above it.

Alaska is the extreme. It shares 1,538 miles of border with Canada, more than any other state, and reported a 13.9% drop in international overnight visitor arrivals last year.

Nevada is second at $77 per resident, despite sitting nowhere near the border. Washington, DC follows at $61. Hawaii, roughly 2,500 miles from Canada, still comes in at $45.

Then Vermont at $37, Maine at $32, California at $31, Florida at $23, Arizona at $22, North Dakota at $18, New York at $15.

The backdrop: Business Insider reports the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on various Canadian items including alcohol and hockey equipment, with a further 50% threatened on Canadian-made steel starting January 1. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would match dollar-for-dollar.

Statistics Canada data showed land arrivals down 33.9%. Visitor numbers have rebounded over the past year but remain below 2024 levels.

One caveat worth holding: the analysis was published in September 2025, so those state figures are forecasts, not settled receipts.

If you run a hotel in Bar Harbor or Burlington, would you notice $37 a head?
