A $19 TARGET DRESS IS ON DISPLAY INSIDE AN $850M MUSEUM

The Merona dress isn't from the National Archives. It's one of two pieces loaned by Michelle Obama herself, along with the studded Sacai belt she wore with it.

🚨 A $19 Target dress is now a museum exhibit inside an $850 million building.

The Obama Presidential Center opened on Chicago's South Side in June. Business Insider toured the museum during opening week and reports that twelve of Michelle Obama's dresses are on display behind glass, kept under controlled humidity and lighting.

Most are on loan from the National Archives' Obama Presidential Library. Two are not. Those came from the former first lady herself. One of them is a sleeveless black-and-beige Merona dress from Target that Glamour reported retailed for $19.

She wore it at the Grand Canyon in 2009. Again in 2011 at a summer camp for military children. Twice more in 2012, deplaning and boarding Air Force One in Hawaii. The studded Sacai belt she paired with it is in the case too.

📈 At the other end of the range: an Atelier Versace rose-gold chainmail gown that weighs about 15 pounds, worn to a State Dinner, displayed with a custom Donatella Versace sketch. A Tracy Reese hot pink dress in the same case later went to retail for under $500.

At the June 18 dedication, Barack Obama said the center was "not just a place to see Michelle's dresses, although I understand that will be the top attraction."

Business Insider found he was close to right. The case was drawing crowds on par with the replica Oval Office.

Would you queue up to see a $19 dress behind glass?
