A $10,000 SEAT IS NOW AMERICAN'S BIGGEST BET
A lie-flat seat can fetch close to $10,000 on some long-haul routes. A seat in the back goes for $2,000 or much less. That gap is the whole strategy.

🔴 A lie-flat seat can bring in close to $10,000 on some long-haul international routes. A seat in the back? $2,000 or much less.
That gap is why American Airlines just rebuilt its biggest plane.
CNBC reports the carrier launched its first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER on Wednesday, the aircraft it uses on its most popular long-haul international flights, including London, Tokyo and Sydney.
The new layout: 144 premium seats. Seventy of those are lie-flat seats with sliding doors in the Flagship Suite section at the front.
Behind the suites sit 44 Premium Economy seats with privacy headrest wings and adjustable calf and footrests, plus 30 Main Cabin Extra seats with extra legroom. The Main Cabin holds 186 regular seats.
📈 This has been the plan since 2022, when American said it would drop international first class on many planes in favor of a single, larger premium cabin up front. The suites started flying last year after supplier delays.
All 20 of its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft will be retrofitted by next year, per CNBC. A similar but smaller layout is coming to the Airbus A321XLRs.
The reason is competitive. Delta and United got a head start on high-spending travelers, and American is chasing. It is also growing its loyalty program, working on its on-time rate and expanding its network. Last week it announced seven new international routes for its 2027 schedule, none of them on the Boeing 777-300ERs.
Would you pay for the suite, or take the $2,000 seat and keep the difference?
