$66M FROM 41 SCREENS: 'THE ODYSSEY' KEEPS IMAX 70MM THROUGH SEPTEMBER

Deadline reports Christopher Nolan's film is getting an extended 70mm run, with added showtimes at 39 Imax 70mm auditoriums through Sept. 30. That pushes the large-format run to 11 weeks.
The math behind the hold: Imax 70mm screenings alone have earned $66M across 41 locations worldwide, a $1.6M per-screen average.
Across all Imax formats, the film has taken $457M at the global box office. That is close to a third of its entire worldwide gross, and the biggest Imax release of all time.
Overall, 'The Odyssey' sits at $1.55 billion. It is Nolan's highest grossing movie and Universal's second highest ever, behind Jurassic World at $1.67B.
According to Deadline, the hold means new titles including Practical Magic 2 with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, and Resident Evil, are not taking those screens this month.
The technical case is part of the draw. It is the first feature shot entirely with Imax film cameras, using a mix of original and new units, including one named The Keighley. Imax says its 15/65mm cameras deliver close to 10x the resolution of conventional 35mm film and 3x that of standard 5-perf 65mm.
The whole film plays in Imax's 1.90:1 expanded aspect ratio, and in select laser and 70mm houses, in 1.43:1.
