🚨 Up to $16.7 billion. That is what Meta agreed to pay to settle a lawsuit over how its platforms affect young users, according to court filings reported by Business Insider.

States brought the case in 2023, alleging Facebook and Instagram were designed to harmfully addict young people to social media.

The money is split across 47 states, the District of Columbia, and several American territories.

But the cash may not be the most expensive part. Business Insider reports Meta also agreed to change its products as part of the deal, including a two-hour daily limit for teens on its platforms.

That is a settlement that reaches into the feed itself. Time spent is the raw material of an advertising business. Capping it for a whole age group is a structural change, not a line item.

The deal is not final. The federal judge overseeing the trial has not yet approved the settlement, though Meta and the plaintiffs have agreed to the terms.

‼️ A two-hour cap on teen scrolling: would that actually change anything in your house?
