$1 MILLION FOR A SHOTGUN PULLED FROM BONNIE AND CLYDE'S DEATH CAR
It beat Billy the Kid's 10-gauge, which went for $978,312 in 2021. Provenance is the whole price: the gun was recovered from the car itself.
🔴 $1 million. For one shotgun.
Clyde Barrow's Browning Auto-5, recovered from the Bonnie and Clyde "death car," sold for $1 million at Rock Island Auction Company's August Premier Auction in Bedford, Texas. Business Insider Markets reports it is now the most expensive shotgun ever sold at auction.
The old record: Billy the Kid's double-barrel 10-gauge, $978,312 in August 2021.
Provenance did the heavy lifting here. The auction house credits the gun's history and paperwork trail for the price.
The bigger money story is the run underneath it. This was the third firearm to clear $1 million at the house this year, all inside a four-month window.
📈 A cased Colt No. 5 Texas Paterson revolver: $1.41 million in May.
📈 Henry rifle serial No. 1: $5.875 million in June, the most expensive rifle ever auctioned.
RIAC President Kevin Hogan called three seven-figure results in a single year "nothing short of historic" and a new benchmark for historic arms collecting.
The same August sale had more. A World War II German Panzer IV medium tank also realized $1 million, the first time two lots hit that number in one firearms auction. A Winchester 1873 One of One Thousand went for $734,375. A platinum-plated Luger pistol made $440,625.
Rock Island Auction Company was founded in 1993 and has led the sector since 2003, per the company.
Would you pay a million dollars for a gun because of who held it?
