🚨 $90,000 for an expert report that was up to 90% written by ChatGPT, according to court filings reported by 404 Media and picked up by the New York Post.

The case: a January 2020 explosion at Watson Grinding in Houston that killed three people and leveled roughly 200 homes. Dozens of homeowners allege 3M failed to properly service the facility's gas detection system.

3M hired Josh Autenrieth of Knighthawk Engineering at $475 an hour. Knighthawk was paid about $90,000 for his report.

During discovery, plaintiffs' attorney Will Moye flagged a five-page document that looked AI generated and demanded the prompts. He got 350 pages of ChatGPT conversations.

Among them, per 404 Media: instructions to "create an exceptional expert witness report defending the standard of care at 3M" and to "show how 3M is 0% at fault for the explosion at Watson Grinding."

He also uploaded a photo of a gas detector and asked the chatbot "what am I looking at?" Moye says that detector is the subject of the whole case. When Autenrieth asked ChatGPT to grade the report, it gave him a 97 out of 100.

Knighthawk VP Nathan Knight called the characterization "fake news" and said AI "did not replace his engineering judgment." Autenrieth acknowledged using ChatGPT in trial transcripts, citing "20-plus years of experience" and saying AI only drafted "a straw man to build off of."

The litigation is ongoing. Nothing here has been decided by a court.

‼️ Would you pay $475 an hour for a report a chatbot drafted?
