$30 MILLION FINE AND FIVE FIRST-ROUND PICKS GONE FOR THE CLIPPERS

The trigger was a $28 million endorsement from Aspiration, a now-bankrupt sponsor Ballmer had personally backed with $50 million before the deal and another $10 million in 2023.

🚨 A $30 million fine, five first-round picks gone, and Steve Ballmer suspended for a year.

Fortune reports the NBA has handed down one of the heaviest penalty packages in its history against the LA Clippers and Kawhi Leonard, following a near year-long independent investigation run by law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

The league found the team and Leonard violated the Collective Bargaining Agreement, citing what it called a pattern of misconduct and multiple significant rules violations.

The starting point: Leonard's reported $28 million endorsement deal from Aspiration, a now-bankrupt environmental company and former Clippers sponsor. Ballmer had invested $50 million in Aspiration before Leonard's deal, and another $10 million in 2023.

Podcaster and journalist Pablo Torre first alleged in 2025 that the endorsement was structured to circumvent the salary cap.

The NBA's findings went further, saying the Clippers affirmatively initiated off-court income opportunities between Leonard and three other companies doing business with the team: Boingo Wireless, Daktronics and Lockton Insurance.

The penalties: $30 million against the organization, forfeiture of five first-round picks from 2029 to 2033, a $700,000 fine on Leonard, a one-year suspension for Ballmer from all league and team activities, a one-year suspension for team president Gillian Zucker, and six months for basketball operations president Lawrence Frank.

🔴 Ballmer is fighting it. An attorney representing him called the investigation a witch hunt that flies in the face of fundamental fairness, and said they are exploring every legal remedy.

Commissioner Adam Silver said the severity of the penalties reflects the seriousness of the violations.

Is losing five first-round picks worse than the $30 million?
