$24M AI CRYPTO SCHEME ENDS IN A GUILTY VERDICT
The pitch was a supercomputer running AI software to mine crypto. Prosecutors say the returns came from new investors' money, not mining.

🚨 $24 million, roughly 400 investors, and a possible 280-year federal prison sentence.
Yahoo reports that prosecutors in Nevada say Las Vegas resident Brent Kovar operated a supposed crypto business that was actually a $24 million Ponzi scheme.
The pitch was built for the moment. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the business "purportedly used artificial intelligence software on a supercomputer to mine cryptocurrency and verify other cryptocurrency transactions."
📉 The terms were the tell. Prosecutors said Kovar promised fixed annual returns of 15% to 30%, along with a 100% money-back guarantee. Authorities allege those payouts came from newer investors rather than any real profit.
Investors were told the company was worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Roughly 400 people put money in.
On Aug. 24, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Nevada said Kovar was "found guilty of 11 counts of wire fraud; two counts of mail fraud; and two counts of money laundering."
That stack of counts is what produces the headline number: a potential 280-year sentence.
‼️ Las Vegas FBI special agent Christopher Delzotto said the victims "thought they were engaged in revolutionary technological advancement, but it was merely a deception crafted by the falsehoods and trickery of Mr. Kovar."
The wider point in the Yahoo piece: with no settled crypto rulebook, prosecutors are using plain old fraud and money-laundering law. It still bites.
Would a promised 30% a year with your money back guaranteed make you invest, or walk away?
