€20M AIRPODS VAT FRAUD ALLEGED ACROSS SIX EU COUNTRIES
Investigators say shell companies faked cross-border supply chains, letting the group reclaim VAT in Germany that was never declared or paid there.

🚨 €20 million in VAT allegedly vanished through wireless earbuds.
The Brussels Times reports that five people were arrested in Czechia, suspected of organising a VAT fraud scheme built around AirPods sales. The European Public Prosecutor's Office announced the operation, code-named "Echo," on Friday.
The alleged mechanics: EU rules exempt cross-border transactions between member states from VAT. Investigators say the group used shell companies to simulate those cross-border supply chains, then claimed VAT back in Germany without the corresponding VAT ever being declared or paid there.
Estimated damage: €20 million between 2019 and 2023. The EPPO says the scheme has been running since at least 2019.
🔴 The five are described as managing directors or "actual directors" of firms tied to the alleged fictitious chains, spread across Bulgaria, Czechia, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania and Slovakia.
Assets moved too. Real estate seized in Czechia. Bank accounts frozen in Czechia, Germany and Lithuania.
This is not the first round. Eight other suspects have already been convicted earlier in the investigation, including one described as a main organiser. Inquiries into others continue.
German tax investigation units in Chemnitz-Süd and Würzburg, Bavaria's money laundering and asset recovery office, and the Czech police's organised crime centre all supported the operation.
The EPPO says all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Should the EU close the cross-border VAT exemption that keeps getting used this way?
